Simone Biles Leads U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Team to Gold, Kicking Off Paris ‘Redemption Tour’
The U.S. women’s gymnastics team has reclaimed its place at the top of the Olympic podium. After securing a silver medal in Tokyo, Simone Biles led Team USA to gold in Tuesday’s team final in Paris.
Italy earned silver and Brazil took bronze, marking its first-ever Olympic team medal and Italy’s first since 1928.
Biles, now the most decorated American gymnast in Olympic history with eight medals, surpasses the previous record held by Shannon Miller.
Previously holding the title of most decorated gymnast globally with 38 combined world and Olympic medals, Biles extended her legacy with this victory.
The gold medal extends a 32-year streak for U.S. women in Olympic gymnastics, starting from the 1992 Barcelona Games. This win marks their fourth team gold medal.
Biles secured the gold with a stunning floor routine, performing to Taylor Swift’s music and showcasing her signature skills.
The U.S. team began strong on the vault and maintained momentum through the uneven bars, where Suni Lee delivered a standout routine. Despite a fall from Jordan Chiles on the beam, the team’s depth and difficulty advantages kept their gold medal hopes intact.
Chiles redeemed herself on the floor, delivering a dynamic performance set to Beyoncé’s music. Jade Carey, the reigning Olympic floor champion, contributed with a high-scoring vault routine but did not compete on the floor after a challenging qualifying round.
Hezly Rivera, the youngest team member at 16, did not compete in the final but will receive a medal for her qualifying round contributions.
Simone Biles had referred to Paris as a “redemption tour” for the team, emphasizing their drive to prove their worth after Tokyo. Suni Lee, the Tokyo all-around gold medalist, also expressed her excitement about achieving success with her teammates.
Both Biles and Lee will compete for individual all-around gold in Thursday’s final.
