Niger Commits to Renewed Engagement in MNJTF
Niger has renewed its commitment to the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) after a high-level meeting in Niamey between Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, and Niger’s Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, General Moussa Salaou Barmou.
The meeting aimed to strengthen security cooperation and bilateral relations between Nigeria and Niger, focusing on enhancing joint efforts in combating threats in the Lake Chad region.
Despite previously withdrawing from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) due to concerns over interference, Niger has pledged to rejoin the MNJTF, a coalition force designed to address regional security issues.
Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Acting Director of Defence Information, highlighted the importance of continued dialogue and collaboration to tackle shared security challenges. Both generals emphasized the need for expanded cooperation, including joint military operations, intelligence sharing, and tactical coordination.
The leaders also addressed the issue of small arms proliferation, recognizing its contribution to regional instability. They agreed to increase efforts to combat the illicit flow of weapons, enhance border security, and support regional and international initiatives to control arms spread.
General Barmou accepted General Musa’s invitation to visit Nigeria to finalize the details of their renewed collaboration. Additionally, a Nigerien advisory group will be established to work closely with its Nigerian counterpart, ensuring ongoing communication and coordination.
General Musa also visited Niger’s Deputy Minister of National Defence, General Sani Kache, as part of the collaborative effort.
