UNIZIK Graduate Dies Escaping Prankster’s Tricycle Robbery; Friend Hospitalized
A recent graduate from the Department of Quantity Surveying at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Ifunanya Miracle, also known as Bliss, tragically lost her life while attempting to escape from a prankster’s robbery on the university premises in Awka, Anambra State.
Ifunanya’s friend, Peace, a student from the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, was also involved in the incident. She sustained various injuries and was rushed to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital for treatment.
NIGERIA NEWS 247 learned that during her studies, Ifunanya ran a Point-of-Sale (PoS) business on the university campus.
On Sunday, June 9, 2024, after closing her business for the day, Ifunanya and Peace boarded a tricycle. During the ride, a passenger allegedly attempted to rob them of their valuables.
A student witness, who requested anonymity, reported that in a desperate attempt to escape, Ifunanya and Peace jumped out of the moving tricycle. While Peace sustained injuries, Ifunanya tragically hit her head on the ground and died as a result.
The student explained, “Miracle had just graduated and operated a PoS business at the university. The incident occurred around 7 pm on June 9. She stored her business equipment under the staircase in our compound, but then we suddenly heard she was dead.”
According to the witness, the alleged robber later claimed it was a prank. Reports suggest he turned himself in to the police, asserting it was a prank gone wrong.
Another student commented, “The man claimed it was a prank after seeing the outcome. The university has not addressed this yet. Miracle just attended her convocation.”
Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, the university spokesperson, confirmed the incident, stating that the prankster, a final-year student, would face disciplinary action after Miracle’s burial.
Dr. Ojukwu said, “The university acknowledges the incident. It was an expensive prank, not a robbery. The students jumped, thinking it was real, leading to one death and one injury. Meetings with the victims’ and prankster’s families established it was a prank. The prankster’s family will cover the funeral and hospital bills. We warn students against such dangerous pranks.”
