The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Anambra State has arrested a suspect for impersonating a Nigerian Navy officer and engaging in fraudulent activities. The suspect, Chukwugozirim Christian, a 39-year-old man from Nnobi in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, was apprehended by NSCDC operatives on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, during a routine patrol at Kwata Junction in Awka.

Anambra State NSCDC Commandant, Maku Olatunde, while presenting the suspect at the command headquarters in Awka on Thursday, revealed that preliminary investigations showed the suspect had been posing as a naval officer, deceiving innocent civilians, and engaging in various criminal activities. Olatunde praised the vigilance and professionalism of the NSCDC operatives in capturing the suspect.

He stated, “On Tuesday, August 6, 2024, our personnel were on patrol to enforce directives from the Commandant General, Ahmed Audi, aimed at preventing disruptive elements and undemocratic forces from disturbing the peace among law-abiding residents, particularly during the #EndBadGovernance nationwide protest. The suspect was noticed for his unusual appearance while impersonating a military officer. His suspicious behavior attracted the attention of our operatives, who quickly pursued and arrested him, bringing him in for questioning.”

During questioning, the suspect claimed to be a naval rating, prompting the NSCDC to contact the Naval Base in Onitsha for verification. However, the Naval authorities confirmed that the suspect was an impostor with no ties to the Nigerian Navy. A search of the suspect’s residence uncovered various incriminating items, including military gear such as a walkie-talkie, black beret and belt, complete blue combat uniform, lanyard, camouflage top, machete, white naval shirt, and blue belt.

Olatunde emphasized that parading the fake naval officer demonstrates the NSCDC’s ongoing efforts to stop individuals using the guise of security personnel to commit crimes in Anambra State. He added, “The corps remains committed to protecting the citizens of Anambra State from impostors and criminals, and we will continue to take decisive action against those who threaten the security and well-being of residents.”

The NSCDC state commandant also directed the Intelligence and Investigation Department to conduct a thorough investigation to identify and apprehend any accomplices of the suspect, who are currently at large. Once the investigation is complete, the suspect will be charged in court. He assured the public that the command would spare no effort in fighting crime in the state and urged residents to stay vigilant and provide timely and accurate information that could lead to the arrest and prosecution of criminal elements.
