The NDLEA in Akwa Ibom Arrests 300 Suspects, Seizes 190.419 kg of Hard Drugs
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Akwa Ibom State has reported significant enforcement actions between July 2023 and May 2024, culminating in the arrest of 300 suspects and the seizure of 190.419 kg of hard drugs. These figures were disclosed by the NDLEA Commander in Akwa Ibom, Obot Bassey, during a news conference held in Uyo to commemorate the 2024 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
According to Bassey, out of the 300 individuals apprehended, 249 were male and 51 were female. Additionally, during this period, 61 drug offenders were successfully prosecuted and convicted in the state. The commander also highlighted the agency’s efforts in treating and rehabilitating 24 male drug-dependent individuals. Moreover, the NDLEA conducted extensive anti-drug abuse campaigns at 82 different locations across Akwa Ibom State.
Bassey emphasized the detrimental impact of drug abuse on individuals’ health and well-being, noting the proliferation of dangerous substances in the illicit drug market that continue to pose serious threats to public health. She underscored the importance of collective efforts from corporate bodies, philanthropists, and the general public in combating drug abuse through proactive prevention measures.
The theme for the 2024 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention,” underscores the urgent need for investments in preventive strategies to curb drug abuse and its associated societal impacts.
This comprehensive approach by the NDLEA in Akwa Ibom reflects ongoing efforts to safeguard public health and promote a drug-free society through robust enforcement, rehabilitation, and awareness initiatives.
