Emir Aminu Ado Bayero

The deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, has returned to the historic city following his removal by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

His whereabouts had been unknown since the governor’s decision on Thursday. The state House of Assembly has revoked the legislation signed by ex-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje on December 5, 2019.

This law had led to the division of the emirate into five parts, each with its appointed Emir. Governor Yusuf, upon signing the repealed Kano Emirates Council Law, granted a 48-hour period for all affected Emirs to vacate their residences and surrender them to the Commissioner of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

Furthermore, he announced the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi as Emir of Kano, who had been dethroned by Ganduje in 2020.

Sanusi was reappointed as the Emir of Kano by Governor Abba Yusuf on Friday, following which he led Jumat prayers at the Government House.

The next day, a video showed Ado Bayero returning to Kano amidst a supportive crowd. The governor cited the Kano Emirate Council Law of 1984 and 2024, along with the kingmakers’ recommendation, in confirming Sanusi’s reinstatement as the 16th Emir of Kano.
