EEDC Denies Imo Govt’s Sabotage Allegation Amid Power Blackout Dispute
Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) has dismissed claims by the Imo State Government alleging that it planned a major electricity outage in the state to sabotage government projects.
The Imo government, in a statement signed by Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation, and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, accused EEDC of plotting to disrupt power supply. This allegation follows an incident days earlier when armed security operatives, reportedly acting under the state government’s orders, invaded the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) office in Imo and forced staff to shut down power.
In a Sunday statement, EEDC’s Group Head, Corporate Communications, Mr. Emeka Ezeh, described the claims as baseless, unfounded, and completely false.
“We advise our esteemed customers in Imo State and the general public to disregard the claim in its entirety, as EEDC has no intention whatsoever to carry out any ‘major power outages’ in the state,” the statement read. EEDC accused the state government of resorting to propaganda to divert attention and undermine the company’s operations.
The company highlighted that on Saturday, 15th November 2025, armed policemen allegedly acting on state orders stormed Egbu Station of TCN and forced operators at gunpoint to shut down all feeders, plunging customers into darkness. “What greater act of sabotage could there be?” EEDC asked.
The utility firm stressed that it is committed to improving electricity supply and urged the state government to provide an enabling environment for licensed operators. EEDC warned that any future outages in Imo State would be the responsibility of the government, not the distribution company.
“EEDC remains dedicated to its mandate and will continue working diligently to ensure sustainable and improved electricity distribution to customers in Imo State,” the statement concluded.
