On Thursday, the people of Enugu State participated in a nationwide protest against economic hardship and poor governance by staying home.

According to our reporter who toured the state capital, daily life came to a standstill as residents stayed off the streets.

By 10 am, all shops, gas stations, malls, and event venues were entirely closed. While the main entrances to significant markets like Ogbete Main Market, New Market, Abakpa Market, and Emene Market were open, they remained empty with no shoppers present.

At ShopRite and SPAR Market, the only individuals present were security personnel patrolling the area. In Okpara Square, the entrance and surrounding roads were dominated by intimidating soldiers and police officers.

Although the gate to Enugu State High Court was open, it was empty aside from two security guards stationed at the entrance.

The Federal High Court remained locked tight. A local resident, Chinasa Omeke, expressed to our reporter that the current situation in Enugu is a direct consequence of intimidation from security forces.

Our community is participating in a sit-at-home protest to avoid violence, she stated. Recent developments indicate that Nigerian security agencies have declared war on citizens who exercise their constitutional right to protest. At the time this report was compiled, very few vehicles were seen on the streets.
