Rising Tension: Organizers Insist on Nationwide Protest Amid Hardship
Organizers of the planned nationwide protests from August 1 to 10 have vowed to proceed despite mounting tension across the country. Irate over the economic crisis, Nigerians are set to stage mass protests in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, aiming to highlight the hardship faced by citizens and potentially persuade the government to reverse some policies.
The situation has caused anxiety among government officials, business owners, and security agencies, who fear possible attacks.
Economic Hardship
The nation has been gripped by severe hunger since President Bola Tinubu ended the fuel subsidy in 2023. The National Bureau of Statistics reported in June that food prices have soared, with items like white Garri and beans increasing by as much as 250%. This economic strain is a key driver behind the planned “Days Of Rage” protests.
Security Concerns
Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Defence Headquarters, and the Department of State Services (DSS), have warned that the protests could worsen the country’s security crisis. They fear the demonstrations could devolve into anarchy, with attacks on individuals and property.
Organizers Unyielding
Despite these warnings, the protest organizers, including former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, insist on proceeding. Sowore stated that the protests will occur as scheduled and that he will participate, even from abroad.
Calls for Dialogue
Politicians, groups, and stakeholders have urged the organizers to replace protests with dialogue. Afenifere, a Pan-Yoruba organization, emphasized the destruction caused by the 2020 EndSARS protests and advocated for peaceful conflict resolution.
Skepticism from Arewa Youths
The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum announced it will not participate, citing the lack of clear objectives. The group stressed that protests should be peaceful and aim to spark dialogue and positive change, not chaos.
Overall, the country braces for the impact of the upcoming protests, with many hoping for a peaceful resolution.
