PDP Explains Reason for Dissolving Akwa Ibom State Executives
The National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Debo Ologunagba, has explained the party’s decision to dissolve its executives in Akwa Ibom State.
Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television on Thursday, Ologunagba said the state executives were being influenced by the governor, who defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“In Akwa Ibom State, the governor has left the PDP. At the National Working Committee and party level, we noticed that the state executives appear aligned with the APC,” he said.
Ologunagba cited Section 10, Subsection 6 of the PDP Constitution, which prohibits members from aligning with other parties or groups to undermine the party.
“No member shall belong to two parties at the same time. We believe the Akwa Ibom executives are being controlled by the governor, who openly stated he will be in charge of both parties,” he added.
Akwa Ibom State has been a PDP stronghold since Nigeria’s return to civil rule in 1999. However, the party’s control weakened after Governor Umo Eno defected to the APC on June 6.
Eno is the second PDP governor in the South-South region to join the APC within two months, following Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State.
Four months after the defection, the PDP moved to dissolve its Akwa Ibom executives amid concerns over divided loyalties.
