In a press conference held in Abuja on Wednesday, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), emphasized that his aspiration for the presidency in 2027 is not driven by personal ambition but by a genuine desire to uplift the poor and less privileged in Nigeria.

The former governor of Anambra State expressed concern over the prevailing trend where public officeholders only engage with the populace during election periods, stressing that addressing the nation’s challenges requires consistent effort and dedication beyond electoral cycles.

Obi underscored the urgency of addressing pressing issues that afflict Nigeria, lamenting that they often go unaddressed due to a lack of sustained focus and commitment from policymakers. He highlighted the plight of millions of Nigerians living in poverty and uncertainty, emphasizing that their daily struggles should be a priority for all leaders.

“I am not driven by desperation to occupy the presidency,” Obi asserted. “My primary goal is to witness tangible improvements in the lives of the poor and less privileged across Nigeria. It is essential for us, as leaders, to remain committed to this cause beyond electoral cycles.”

Obi urged fellow politicians and public servants to adopt a similar mindset, emphasizing the need for sustained efforts to alleviate poverty and enhance the welfare of all citizens. He stressed that genuine progress requires a collective commitment to addressing the root causes of social and economic inequality.

“As leaders, we must prioritize the needs of the people and work tirelessly to create a more equitable society,” Obi remarked. “Our focus should be on implementing policies and initiatives that uplift the most vulnerable segments of society and provide them with opportunities for growth and prosperity.”
