Tennis: Djokovic Overcomes Nadal as Daley Secures Fifth Olympic Medal
Novak Djokovic overcame a determined comeback by Rafael Nadal on Monday in what may be the final chapter of their storied tennis rivalry at the Paris Olympics. Meanwhile, British diver Tom Daley earned his fifth medal across five Games.
In swimming, Canada’s Summer McIntosh began her quest for gold in the 400m medley during the morning session, while Australian Ariarne Titmus is expected to contend for her second gold later in the day.
Under the clear blue Paris skies, a welcome change from the rainy opening ceremony just three days prior, gold medals are available in 11 sports. With a heat warning in effect for Paris and surrounding areas, the most anticipated event was at Roland Garros, where Djokovic and Nadal faced off for the 60th time.
Djokovic, who entered the match with a narrow 30-29 lead in their rivalry, had struggled on clay against Nadal in past encounters. However, age and injuries have taken their toll on Nadal, who had anticipated difficulty competing against Djokovic.
The match began with Djokovic dominating the first set, winning 6-1. Nadal fought back in the second set, coming from 4-0 down to level at 4-4, fueled by the enthusiastic Roland Garros crowd. Djokovic ultimately secured a 6-1, 6-4 victory, with both legends embracing at the net and Nadal acknowledging the crowd.
In diving, Tom Daley and partner Noah Williams won a heartfelt silver medal in the men’s synchronized 10m platform, finishing behind China’s Lian Junjie and Yang Hao. Williams, emotional about the absence of his former coach Dave Jenkins, and Daley, remembering his late father Rob, reflected on their achievements with pride.
Daley’s Olympic journey began at 14 with a bronze in 2008 and included another bronze in Rio and Tokyo before winning gold in the men’s synchronized 10m platform in Tokyo. China claimed the first diving gold in Paris, with the United States and Britain taking the remaining podium spots in the women’s synchronized 3m springboard.
In gymnastics, China and Japan will compete for gold in the men’s team final. Additional gold medals are up for grabs in archery, canoeing, mountain biking, equestrian, fencing, judo, shooting, and skateboarding. Yuto Horigome will defend his men’s skateboarding street title, with Japan also in contention for all three medals in the event.
In women’s basketball, the United States will begin their quest for an eighth consecutive gold medal against Japan, with veteran Diana Taurasi aiming for her sixth gold in her final international tournament.
Olympic organizers also canceled a second day of triathlon training in the River Seine due to pollution from recent rain.
