Lagos Protester with Empty Pot Reveals She Eats Only Once a Day
Generous Nigerians have started donating cash to an unidentified female protester who took to the streets of Lagos on Friday with an empty pot, symbolizing the widespread hunger in the country. Chanting “Ebi o! Ebi o!” (Hunger o! Hunger o!), the woman, seen on Kudirat Abiola Way, Ikeja, called on the government to assist impoverished Nigerians and improve the economy.
The protest, part of a larger movement across Nigeria, attracted a large crowd expressing dissatisfaction with government policies and economic conditions. Organized by groups like the Take It Back Movement, Concerned Nigerians, and Revolution Now, the protesters are demanding changes in government policies and an end to hardship and corruption.
The woman’s empty pot resonated with many protesters struggling with inflation, unemployment, and economic instability. The demonstration in Lagos was one of many nationwide, with citizens demanding better governance and accountability.
In a viral video posted by Vanguard on X, the woman revealed she is from Ibadan, Oyo State, and has lived in Lagos for over 50 years. She lamented in another viral clip that she could barely afford one meal a day. Speaking in Yoruba, she said, “I can barely afford to eat once a day. The hunger is unbearable. My children are suffering. There’s no money in my pocket. Does this government want to kill us? Overthinking is killing me. I can no longer survive. It is too much to bear. The government should come to my aid.”
In response to her plea, several Nigerians offered financial assistance. Afrobeat singer Oxlade initiated the donations by pledging N500,000. He shared her photo on X and announced his intention to donate. As of 6:40 pm on Saturday, donations from various individuals and groups had reached nearly N3.2 million.
