Nigeria has witnessed significant progress under Tinubu in one year – Akume
George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has noted substantial progress across different sectors of Nigeria’s economy since President Bola Tinubu took office in May 2023.
The Tinubu government has implemented a series of measures that have worsened the economic difficulties faced by Nigerians, such as the elimination of fuel subsidies and the fluctuation of the national currency.
During the Ministerial Sectoral Updates in Abuja, Akume mentioned that the government has introduced social welfare programs to alleviate these challenges.
The current leadership in Nigeria has made substantial progress in different areas, as highlighted by the SGF.
- In 2023, the President’s approval of the Electricity Bill marked a significant shift in the electricity sector by breaking up monopolistic control and empowering State Governments, Corporations, and individuals to generate, distribute, and transmit electricity. This move effectively decentralized the power sector.
- Agree to the enactment of the Nigeria Data Protection Bill 2023, which sets out rules to protect personal data and encourage data security measures in Nigeria.
- Eliminating the Fuel Subsidy, a difficult yet crucial decision, is essential to combat corruption and inefficiency while reducing the financial burden on the government. This policy has long been criticized for primarily benefiting the wealthy and smugglers instead of effectively helping the general population.
During President Tinubu’s inaugural year, there have been notable advancements across multiple sectors of our economy.
The Nigerian economy has displayed resilience and promise for expansion under his leadership, attributed to judicious fiscal strategies and targeted investments.
Emphasizing infrastructure enhancement, employment generation, and economic diversification, the administration has established a groundwork for enduring advancement and well-being for all citizens.
Additionally, the government’s dedication to upholding good governance and the rule of law has fortified our democratic structures, fostering transparency and accountability in governance.
Akume emphasized the importance of citizen involvement in nation building, highlighting that it is a collective effort beyond just the government’s role.
He urged for a renewed commitment to unity, peace, and progress, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts to unlock the full potential of our nation.
