Mikel Arteta has issued a challenge to Arsenal, urging them to demonstrate that their dismal Champions League history against Bayern Munich is a thing of the past as they strive to capitalize on their “special” opportunity to reach the semi-finals.

Despite a string of demoralizing defeats to Bayern over the past decade, Arteta believes his team can reverse this trend in Tuesday’s quarter-final first leg. Having suffered 5-1 losses in their last three encounters with Bayern, Arsenal were knocked out of the Champions League by the German club in the last 16 stages in 2017, 2014, 2013, and 2005.

Nevertheless, Arteta remains confident in Arsenal’s abilities, especially considering their impressive form in the Premier League and Bayern’s current turmoil. Dismissing the significance of past encounters, the Spanish manager called on his players to prove themselves on the pitch.

“That’s history. When you look at their history in the competition, it’s clear. We have to prove that, that’s for sure,” Arteta stated during a press conference on Monday. “Football is such a competitive environment, and it’s so hard to be consistent that this can happen to anybody.”

Emphasizing the team’s current success and their excitement for the upcoming challenge, Arteta highlighted the importance of overcoming Bayern, a powerhouse in European football.

Arsenal’s last appearance in the Champions League semi-finals dates back to 2009, and they will be aiming to reach that stage for the first time since 2010.
