Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has strongly criticized the premature political campaigns for the 2027 general elections, describing them as unlawful and a major distraction from the pressing demands of governance.

Speaking during an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television on Tuesday, Falana pointed out that the early campaigns violate the provisions of Nigeria’s Electoral Act. He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take immediate action and caution politicians — including state governors — who are already engaging in pre-election activities.

“As far as the 2027 elections are concerned, the ongoing political campaigns are totally illegal. They are also diversionary because what Nigerians expect now, and what the law provides for, is governance, not distraction,” he said.

Falana emphasized that Nigeria’s legal framework does not support electioneering this far ahead of a scheduled vote.

“There’s no provision in the law for campaigns two years before an election. It’s not part of our legal framework,” he stated.

He called on INEC to enforce the provisions of the Electoral Act and ensure that political actors comply with the legally defined campaign timeline.

In addition, Falana urged the media to play its constitutional role in promoting accountability and upholding the rule of law.

“If those in power want to amend the law to allow early campaigns, then due process must be followed. But until then, everyone must respect the law,” he concluded.
