Tragedy in Ogun as 11 Die After Vehicle Plunges Off Bridge

At least 11 people have died in a tragic lone road crash that occurred at Eruku Bridge along the Abeokuta–Lagos Expressway on Sunday night.

The fatal accident involved a gold-coloured Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE722KJ, which reportedly somersaulted and plunged off the bridge, trapping all occupants inside the car.

According to a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Odunsi Afolabi, the Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, confirmed that emergency responders were immediately dispatched to the scene from the Itori unit.

Ogunjobi disclosed that all 11 occupants of the vehicle—comprising 10 adult males and one adult female—lost their lives instantly due to the severity of the crash and the fact that the doors became locked upon impact.

“The Incident: A gold Toyota with registration GGE722KJ somersaulted and fell off the bridge, trapping the occupants inside as the doors locked upon impact,” the statement read.

He further explained that FRSC personnel, with the assistance of members of the local community, had to dismantle parts of the vehicle before the bodies could be recovered. The remains of the victims were later deposited at the State Specialist Hospital morgue in Ifo.

Preliminary findings by the FRSC attributed the crash to driving under the influence (DUI) and overloading, which are believed to have contributed to the driver losing control of the vehicle.

The Sector Commander extended condolences to the families of the deceased and urged motorists using the Abeokuta–Lagos route to exercise heightened caution, especially when driving at night, to avoid similar tragedies.

The incident adds to growing concerns over road safety on major highways, where reckless driving and overloading continue to be identified as leading causes of fatal crashes.
