“I Was in My Mother’s Womb for 12 Months’ – Obasanjo

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo expressed his deep regret that his mother did not live to see his achievements, despite carrying him for 12 months. He shared this sentiment during the presentation of the drama “Aremu Omo Asabi” at the 66th remembrance event for his late mother, held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Obasanjo reflected on the hardships his mother faced, including her struggles with witches and wizards while pregnant with him. He lamented that she did not live to witness the success of her efforts.

“I was told I spent 12 months in her womb, and since birth, I have never been separated from her influence. She had nine children, but only two of us survived—myself and my sister. My father believed that no matter how educated a female child became, she would ultimately end up in the kitchen,” Obasanjo said.

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, represented by Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele, praised Mama Bernice Obasanjo as a remarkable woman whose legacy continues through her children, particularly Chief Obasanjo, a prominent figure in Nigerian history. He emphasized the enduring role of mothers as the foundation of society and called for support and honor for mothers, highlighting the administration’s commitment to policies that support quality education, healthcare, and opportunities for children.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Secretary to the State Government Mrs. Salu Hundeyin, commended Chief Obasanjo for paying tribute to his mother after 66 years. He underscored the special role of mothers as divine instruments deserving of honor and respect.
