Rooney Calls Out Luis Enrique and Reveals Bayern Munich’s Weakness in UCL Analysis
Wayne Rooney has criticised Luis Enrique following UEFA Champions League semi-final first-leg match in which Paris Saint-Germain secured a dramatic 5-4 victory over Bayern Munich on Tuesday.
Rooney, speaking during his post-match analysis for Prime Video, questioned PSG’s game management after they allowed Bayern to remain competitive despite leading 5-2 at a stage of the encounter. He argued that Luis Enrique should have adopted a more conservative approach to close out the tie.
“I think Luis Enrique is a top coach so when they had the advantage at 5-2, I think then he should’ve said, ‘right, let’s shut up shop, let’s get behind the ball, make it hard, see the tie out’, potentially that would’ve got them to the final but they did not, they went for more goals,” Rooney said.
The former Manchester United striker also highlighted what he described as a major defensive weakness in Bayern Munich under manager Vincent Kompany. He suggested that the German side’s attack-oriented style has come at the expense of defensive organisation, which contributed to their concession of what he termed avoidable goals.
“Vincent Kompany has got a very attack-minded team, and I think you could clearly see they have not worked that much on defending because some of the goals we have seen are schoolboy goals,” Rooney added.
The result leaves PSG with a narrow advantage heading into the second leg of the high-stakes semi-final tie.
