What was meant to be a routine friendly between the England national team and the Uruguay national team quickly turned heated after a dangerous incident early in the second half.
Ronald Araújo, the Uruguay and Barcelona defender, lunged into a heavy sliding tackle on Phil Foden as the England star attempted to break down the wing. The challenge resulted in a strong impact to Foden’s legs and immediately raised concern.
The reaction from the England bench was swift, with head coach Thomas Tuchel furious on the touchline, calling for a straight red card. He was visibly angered that such a reckless tackle occurred in a friendly match, especially with the 2026 World Cup approaching.
Despite the severity of the challenge, the referee chose not to issue even a yellow card. Foden, however, was unable to continue and had to be substituted, with Cole Palmer coming on in his place.
By the 70th minute, the match remained goalless.
