Former Watford striker, Troy Deeney has expressed skepticism over Arsenal’s new signing, Viktor Gyökeres, suggesting the Swedish forward may struggle to deliver in the Premier League.

Speaking after Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United on Sunday, Deeney said he is “not convinced” that Gyökeres will score as many goals as fans expect. The 26-year-old joined the Gunners this summer from Portuguese side Sporting CP in a deal reportedly worth £55 million.

Gyökeres was brought in to strengthen Arsenal’s attacking line, but Deeney believes the transition from the Portuguese league to the Premier League presents a much bigger challenge.

“People don’t realise the difference between playing in Portugal and playing for Arsenal, Manchester United, or Liverpool,” Deeney said.

He further suggested that Germany international Kai Havertz could be preferred by manager Mikel Arteta to lead the line, even hinting that Gyökeres could end up as a bench player at the Emirates.

Against United, both Gyökeres and Havertz failed to score, despite Arsenal securing all three points through Riccardo Calafiori’s first-half header.

Deeney warned that Arsenal fans may be disappointed if they expect the former Sporting star to immediately replicate his prolific form from Portugal, citing the increased pressure and competitiveness in English football.
